The Plitvice Lakes national park, rich in karstic rock in several layers forming natural dams, has 16 interconnected lakes with dozens of waterfalls between them. Most of the lakes are richly coloured from turquoise to green by moss, cyanobacteria, and algae, but also bear an extremely translucent quality such that one can see clearly to the bottom of many of them. The park is also abundant in both flora and fauna of various sorts. The park was under some threat during political and military incidents in the early 1990's, but was later fully cleared of mines and protected as a national park, and is now a UNESCO world heritage site.
