Istanbul, Turkey
Whether known as Byzantium, Constantinople, or now Istanbul, this city located at the southern tip of the strait of Bosphorus adjacent to the Marmara sea is historic as a capital of four major empires, a dividing line and trade center between Asia and Europe, and as a major cultural and economic center throughout its time. Largely unaffected by many major wars, there are buildings and structures over 1500 years old that are still standing including the huge Hagia Sophia, built as a church in the 6th century, converted to a mosque in the 15th century and into a museum in the 20th century. Istanbul today is rich in culture influenced by Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and is also rich in cuisine. The famous Orient Express service served Istanbul for a long time, with the first direct run from Paris to Istanbul in 1889. In this visit to Istanbul in 2007, I follow the 1889 route through Budapest, Brasov and Bucuresti, and depart Istanbul following part of the Simplon route through Sofia and Beograd before returning to Switzerland, with a 2 day stay in Istanbul.
