Abisko is a national park situated in the UNESCO world-heritage inscribed Lappland, 250 km north of the arctic circle in Sweden. It is also the name of a town located 4 km nearby. Both are served by the Connex electric sleeper train from Stockholm to Narvik, the northernmost operating passenger railway in the world, it is a popular arctic destination for winter sports and hiking.
This trip was made in March, with the entire park still covered in snow and auroras visible at night, but with sun during the daytime. This location is highly recommended for anyone from temperate climates looking to see a totally different face of the Earth. A well-equipped lodge (with kitchens and a restaurant) next to the train station makes staying overnight easy, but be prepared to walk through deep snow and ice.
