This ancient town has been inhabited since ancient times by the Lâm Ấp and Champa kingdoms and was a major trading port over many centuries. It also was influenced by Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Indian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese settlers. Its old town is well-preserved and contains a number of monuments, and is today listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
