Photo usage policy for dheera.net

This document describes the usage policy for all photographs in the dheera.net website. The term "author" as used below refers to Dheera Venkatraman, who took all photos posted to this website.

0. Usage of photos containing identifiable individuals.
This includes all photos in which the identity of particular individuals can be reasonably deduced from the photo. In such cases, the individuals in the photo collectively hold all rights to the photo. In particular, if you are the only identifiable individual, all rights are released to you. Any identifiable individual may request the removal of the photo from this website. The consent of all identifiable individuals must be obtained directly from those individuals for any use or modification of the photo. The permission or contact of the author is not necessary. The author assumes no responsibility for ensuring that this consent is obtained, and any alleged violations to consent from those individuals are not the responsibility of the author.

1. Usage of photos not containing identifiable individuals.
In cases where no individuals in the photo are reliably identifiable, the author reserves all rights to the image, except for the following specifically granted uses below. All specifically granted uses indicated below are limited to uses of the image as-is, except for the following allowed modifications: cropping, resizing, file format changes, brightness and contrast adjustments to the entire image at once, adding explanatory aids such as text/lines/shapes, and incorporation into larger images and documents.

1a. Personal use, in which the use of the image is only for your own personal or household use and without further distribution or publication. This includes use of images as desktop backgrounds. Such usage is permitted without permission and without credit or citation.

1b. Educational use, in which the image is used as part of a school or university unpublished project, assignment, or teaching aid. Such usage is permitted without explicit permission but with proper citation to the author. Proper citation must include providing least one of the following with the document: (1) the author's full name, or (2) the URL of the image on dheera.net, or (3) the URL of the dheera.net home page.

1c. Informational use, in which the image is used with the sole purpose of providing information or to increase the quality of written material, and in which the use is non-profit and largely factual. Wikipedia is included in this category. The author will most likely approve such uses by releasing the image under the GDFL or CC-SA-2.5 licenses, but permission must be obtained from the author. In online web pages only, it is acceptable to use the image before obtaining permission of the author, with proper citation similar to (1b), and immediately notifying the author with the URL of the page, after which the author will review the use. If the author is granted permission to directly edit the page at will (such as in Wikipedia or other wikis), the author reserves the right to remove the image at any time, after which no further use of the image in that page is permitted without the express consent of the author. If the author is not granted permission to directly edit the page, the author must be able to find updated contact information on the page, and reserves the right to require that the image be removed at any point in the future.

1d. Commercial use, in which the image is used as part of the efforts of a for-profit organization, whether or not profits are made directly from the image itself. Such use is strictly prohibited without the express consent of the author.

For uses not covered above, permission must be obtained from the author.

2. Existence of photos that violate copyrights or regulations.
The author has made a best effort to not violate copyrights and regulations in taking pictures. In cases where a violation is found (including, but not limited to, photos of copyright material), the author duly apologizes and is willing to remove the photo upon receipt from an individual associated with the property, a citation of the violation.

3. Miscellaneous.
Where legal, the author reserves the right to grant exceptions to the above policies to a specific individual or organization, for specific image. The author reserves the right to change this policy at any time without notice.
